About our Sumi-dyed “Dirty” Horsebutt leather, part of our SUMI SERIES

Using the Yuen-boku Sumi that’s made from the soot of burning vegetable oils, we stone-grind the Sumi ink stick in water to make the ink before it’s ready to hand-dye and finish each of these leather hides over the period of three weeks in Long Beach, California.

At the base, it’s the same vegetable tanned Guidi horsebutt leather as Dark ‘n Stormy, but using the Sumi ink to hand-dye & finished this leather, with a thorough series of hand-wash treatments to seal in the finest carbon particles, produces a soft reflective sheen on the surface from the residual carbon particles in the leather pores that create a natural marbling effect, accentuate the grain structure and foster deep contrasting fades with wear.

The end result produces the softest full-aniline Horsebutt leather imaginable with other-worldly pull-up that’s highly contrasting to light and hypnotizing with patina potential.
